On February 15, international media reported the passing of actor Robert Duvall at age 95. With a career spanning more than six decades, it was only natural that the American legend would rack up incredible films — and a lot of awards along the way.
In honor of Duvall’s legacy and impact, today you’re revisiting six of the best films he starred in.

The Godfather (1972)
We’re kicking things off, of course, with the most iconic film of Robert Duvall’s career. In this epic gangster classic, he plays Tom Hagen — consigliere, lawyer, and the Corleone family’s unofficial adopted son. His performance adds even more layers to a character who’s logical but also deeply wounded. He also reprises the role in The Godfather Part II.

Apocalypse Now (1979)
Another classic to add to the list — and another collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola. In this feature, though, he gets even more spotlight. He plays Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore, commander of the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment. To shape the character, extremely inflexible yet still showing flashes of humanity, Duvall drew inspiration from real-life officers and consulted with military personnel, even tweaking parts of the officer’s personality with the director’s approval.

The Great Santini (1979)
That same year, Duvall stepped into another Lieutenant Colonel role: this time as Bull P. Meechum. The drama was directed by Lewis John Carlino and based on the novel of the same name by Pat Conroy. As the film’s lead, he delivered a performance that’s almost unpredictable and completely unforgettable.

Tender Mercies (1983)
One of the roles that earned Robert the most awards in his career. In this drama directed by Bruce Beresford, he plays former singer-songwriter Mac Sledge, whose career and relationships were wrecked by alcoholism. It’s a true work of art that makes you reflect on love, death, and the compromises we make along the way.

The Apostle (1997)
And what can we even say about this religious-themed film? Written, directed, and led by him, The Apostle features a cast that includes Farrah Fawcett, Walton Goggins, and Billy Bob Thornton. The story follows a charismatic Texas Pentecostal preacher who discovers an affair and goes through a spiritual rebirth via re-baptism. The rest is on you; watch it as soon as you can.

The Judge (2014)
One of the actor’s most recent standout performances, where Duvall shines alongside Robert Downey Jr. In The Judge, he plays Judge Joseph Palmer, suspected of murder and also the father of the lawyer investigating the case, sparking a journey filled with mystery and long-overdue reconnection. The supporting cast is stacked, featuring Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shepard, Leighton Meester, and Billy Bob Thornton.

May his legacy live on forever. Rest easy, Robert!
